Something that isn’t as obvious to most entertainment is the surprising amount of wholesome media. Many shows and movies seem to focus on or highlight dramatics or violence. Even more, many comedies have more dark humor or shock value. Mature and dark content seems to be prioritized, leaving other media content buried. So, let’s dig through all the mature media and discover why it appears to be a rarity in wholesome media.

Dark means Mature

A good place to start is separating entertainment by genre and age groups. As audiences age, it only makes sense that media should grow with them. However, most audiences have a mindset of dark and mature content for older viewers. This results in many shows and movies marketed to adults being dark, gritty, or crude. Entertainment focusing on particular age groups makes content for specific ages.

Reflecting Reality

A possible reason for more shows and films becoming less optimistic is the current times. For a few years, it feels like we’re in more pessimistic times, and our entertainment reflects this. It became normal to see something bad happen regularly; in small, good moments, it became normal to see it in the media. As a result, even when the media curates positive content, it is often replaced by negative media. The mindset that the world is a cruel place bleeds into entertainment.

Closing thoughts

Looking back, it is sad that some entertainment leans toward dark writing. However, we may experience a lot of bleakness and cynicism, which shouldn’t stop you from digging for brighter media. We can encourage others, whether they are studios or independent creators. There’s an untapped demand for colorful and optimistic shows. Many people want to believe in the goodness in the world, so let’s see it on screens and pages. The world is only as cruel as you make it, so entertainment should reflect that.
