Comedy is difficult to get right when producing a movie. You need a comedic line timed perfectly with the right actor to pull it off. However, your film becomes hilarious when someone finds your attempts at drama so ridiculous that it makes them laugh. Tommy Wiseau experienced this by releasing the movie, "The Room," in the Summer of 2003.
The film’s plot is nonsensical and hard to follow, with certain plot points being completely dropped or forgotten. People can gather from the film’s plot that it follows a banker named Johnny, who finds that his wife, Lisa, is in a love triangle with him and his best friend, Mark. The plot doesn’t bring people in; the horrible dialogue and awkward acting make people fall in love with the film. It’s so bad that people find it hilarious.
The story behind the creation of “The Room” is full of confusion and mystery, with several unanswered questions. Initially, the film was supposed to be a stage play before becoming a novel that would be 500 pages long and then transform into a script that we see come to life.
The film is shocking to see for the first time if you ever come across info that the movie had a budget of $6 million. There was no good reason for it to cost $6 million when it looked so cheaply made. So then, why did the film cost so much? It was due to the mismanagement of money. For instance, Tommy Wiseau decided to use two cameras to record, one in 35mm and the other in HD, which he would soon trash, making his expensive purchase wasteful. Another waste of money was on the crew, which he had to replace repeatedly, as Tommy would fire them if they ever suggested rewriting the script.
Despite everything, “The Room” is a testament that you don’t need to make a grand epic film to achieve admiration. The film’s horrible money management created an incredibly awful movie that became a source of entertainment for many. Even 20 years after its release, the film is in packed theaters and shares inside jokes and rituals. While we forget many films, “The Room” will continue being a cult classic.
