Born in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Sacramento, California, Nieto discovered his athletic talent early on. After graduating from high school, he attended Sacramento City College and Eastern Michigan University, where he earned an athletic scholarship and became a three-time All-American. His achievements culminated in earning a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team in Athens after winning the National Championships in Sacramento. Nieto’s later success led to his induction into both Sacramento City College and Eastern Michigan University’s Hall of Fame, and he went on to compete again at the 2012 London Olympics before retiring from professional athletics.

In 2007, Nieto turned his focus toward the arts, pursuing a career as an actor, writer, and producer. His breakout role came in the 2009 faith-based film The Encounter, which ranks among the top ten films of its genre. He went on to secure recurring television roles, including appearances on Family Time (Bounce TV), AWAY (Netflix), and Raising Kanan (Starz), where he portrayed “De-Mo.”

However, Nieto’s journey took a life-altering turn in April 2016 when a backflip attempt resulted in a severe spinal injury, leaving him paralyzed. Defying medical expectations, he stunned the world when he walked his bride down the aisle at their wedding—a moment captured and celebrated by ESPN as a global story of toughness and love.
