Ancient Egypt: one of the greatest, yet mysterious civilizations that has ever existed in human history. To this day, the modern world continues to uncover the land’s ancient past; from uncovering lost artifacts, the expedition of ancient tombs, and the extraordinary discovery of ancient monuments that still stands to this very day. The events that led to this civilization thriving can be traced as far back as what’s now known as the “Predynastic” period. In that era, Egypt, which was originally known as Kemet, was divided into two regions: the Red Lands, which were known as Upper Kemet in the south, and the Black Lands, which were known as Lower Kemet towards the north hemisphere.
Unification
The man credited for uniting the two lands is known as Narmer, who is hailed to this day as the unifier and founder of the Early Dynastic period of the Pharaohs. Through the unification of the two lands, the kingdom of Kemet thrived for over three millennia; building great monuments, receiving bountiful harvests near the Nile and becoming more attuned with their spiritual practices. Everyone in the empire’s establishment lived in equilibrium; including those who were deemed disabled. In fact, their disorders were not seen as something to be disregarded, but rather that of divine blessings from the deities of the ancient Kemet pantheon, earning them their roles as high priests, doctors and even, in some cases, as advisors to the pharaohs, themselves.
3000 Years of Longing
The kingdom lived in a time of economic and cultural growth up until the arrival of the Greeks, led by Alexander the Great. With little effort, they conquered Kemet and established their dominance of the ancient land by continuing the ancient traditions of the desert empire. Their rule would fracture, however, when Cleopatra VII, the last known ruler of Ancient Kemet during the Ptolemaic period, wanted to implement her own policies in the land and defied the wishes of the Roman government. After her fall, the Roman Empire also suffered a collapse, which eventually led to the Sasanian Persian army to conquer the land of Kemet, before ultimately falling under the occupation of the Muslim Rashidun Army, who’s Arab descendants still inhabit the region to this very day.
The Present
Much of the kingdom’s history was lost to the sands of time and the Arab people migrated into the ancient lands to establish their settlement. However, in recent years, explorers began uncovering ancient monuments and writings that leave details about the kingdom’s ancient past throughout the course of history. This eventually led to the study of “Egyptology,” excavating and deciphering the ancient language to modern society. There are hundreds of tombs that have been uncovered across the sands, and many more monuments are being discovered, be it by design or by pure accident. One thing is certain: this ancient kingdom is revealing many secrets to the world, and we’re only scratching the surface of its long history.
