Tony Grant is a well-renowned American R&B singer, writer, producer, and actor born in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. He is most well-known for Tell Hell I Ain’t Coming, Soul Damage, and Athena, and he is currently the lead singer of the legendary group The Temptations.
Tony Grant and Early Life
Grant’s early life is reminiscent of high-energy and athletic competition between him and his brothers. He was pursuing and playing several sports, including track and field and football. Despite his small stature, Grant received a full scholarship to play football in college due to his speed. In college, one evening, while playing piano and singing, a fellow student overheard him and encouraged him to pursue a singing career. Tony started his career in 1991 after developing an interest in the field of acting since his childhood.
Grant disagreed that singing fit his image of a masculine male football player, so he declined and refused to pursue it as a career. That is until that fellow student signed him up for a signing competition without his knowledge and approval. While attending the college signing competition, the host called Grant’s name, and he refused to go on stage. That is until the football team called him a “girl” for being afraid to take the stage. Unwilling to be considered a “scaredy cat,’ Grant took the stage and sang, unpracticed, “The Greatest Love of All, and won the $1000 reward. That was the beginning of the extraordinary career he’s lived.
Tony Grant Success As Lead Singer Of R&B Group Az Yet
After singing in many other competitions and performing in the famous Ebony Fashion Fair shows, Grant later joined Az Yet, an American R&B group from Philadelphia, replacing Marc Nelson, who left the group to establish a solo career in 1997. Az Yet released their self-titled debut album in 1996 on La Face Records. The album featured musical heavyweights, including Babyface, David Foster, Sheila E., and Brian McKnight. The first single, “Last Knight,” reached #9 on the US Hot 100, #1 on the R&B chart, peaked at #2 on Australia’s ARIA charts, and spent 2 weeks at #1 in New Zealand’s RIANZ charts, achieving platinum status in the US. The group’s second single, “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” (a cover of the Chicago hit featuring Peter Cetera), was nominated for a Grammy award (Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals), reached #8 on the Hot 100, also achieving platinum status. Driven by these two singles, the album went to RIAA platinum status.
Tony Grant’s Lead Singer of Chicago & The Temptations
Serendipitously, Grant later became the lead singer of the group Chicago after the group Az Yet disbanded. He also performed the hit song “Why I Love You” by recording artist Major, serenading actress Lisa Ray, and caught the eye of both the legendary groups The Four Tops and The Temptations. The Temptations courted Grant, and he later joined the group as the lead singer.
Today, Grant has appeared in many movies, stage plays, and television shows. Grant has starred in The Marriage Chronicles: She’s Not Our Sister, She’s Still Not Our Sister, Confessions Of A Lonely Wife, Tyler Perry’s “Madea Gets A Job,” “A Madea Christmas,” “A Madea’s Christmas,” “Madea Gets a Job”, “Why Did I Get Married,” “The Marriage Counselor,” Angela Barrow Dunlap “Church Girl,’ Tell Hell I Ain’t Coming, JD Lawrence’s “The Clean Up Woman,” and Love thy Neighbor. In 2007, he also released his album Grant Life. His most popular singles include Cry, Sunshine, What’s Up With This, I Want, Personality, a thief in the night, Storm and I Believe. Grant is still the lead singer of the group The Temptations.
