Journaling has always been a staple activity for most writers. This method of recollection allows us to jot down past experiences that have a profound effect on us all. The same can be said with memoirs, which are nonfictional accounts of a person’s life in the form of a book. We all have experiences that warrant us never forgetting what we felt during those times. The most profound experiences are unexpected and tackle us without warning.

Emotions Through Writing

Journals and memoirs also express our deepest emotions within our subconscious, displaying a form of vulnerability for certain individuals to understand. They can range from the greatest of times to the darkest of days. When our voices are not heard, it is usually through writing that people begin to pay attention. That’s often the case when adapting these stories in film. To name a few examples, we’ll start with the 2018 film Beautiful Boy.

Adapting Thoughts to Film

Based on the memoirs written by father and son, David and Nic Sheff, the film recounts the events of a family recovering from years of addiction. It’s a heartbreaking story of survival, relapse, and recovery. As much as the events of the film were difficult to watch at times, at the same time, it makes us somewhat relatable to the people who went through their struggles. The next example stems more from the realm of fiction but also has the same effect as an actual memoir. In 2005’s Memoirs of a Geisha, Nitta Sayuri, a woman hailing from a Japanese fishing village, recounts her journey of becoming the most renowned geisha in Japan.

A Moment of Reflection

The last example is from the 1999 film October Sky, which tells the true story of Homer Hickam, the son of a coal miner, inspired by Spudnik’s first launch and strives to become a rocketeer, despite his father’s reluctance. As we often recollect our past, revisiting the many triumphs and failures of our time, we often find ourselves amazed at our humble beginnings and how we managed to become the people we are today. The past is a life lesson for not only the individuals within ourselves but to be passed down and reflected on by others; allowing everyone to navigate this vast ocean of life. While it is true that we often try to forget our past due to “less-than-ideal” circumstances, they also define our present, which ultimately influences the future moving forward. So, Take every moment you can get and walk with a stride in your steps.
