Marla Gibbs is an American actress, singer, comedian, writer, and television producer whose career spans seven decades. She is known for her role as Florence Johnston, George Jefferson’s maid, on the CBS hit sitcom The Jeffersons from 1975–1985, for which she received five nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Her Daughter, Angela Gibbs, is an American actress. She has acted professionally since the 1970s in films such as Cleopatra Jones, The Healers, and The Naked Cage. She later went on to act in films including Drumline, Think Like A Man and Straight Outta Compton. Gibbs has also worked in television series, including Sandford & Son, Black Jesus, On My Block, The Fosters, This is Us, Sealab 2021, Hacks, and Not Dead Yet. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Gibbs is the daughter of actress Marla Gibbs.

Marla Gibbs also starred in the show’s spin-off Checking In (1981) and the NBC sitcom 227 (1985–1990); Gibbs coproduced the latter series, played the lead role of Mary Jenkins, and sang the theme song. In later years, Gibbs played supporting roles in films The Meteor Man (1993), Lost & Found (1999), The Visit (2000), The Brothers (2001), Madea’s Witness Protection (2012), Grantham & Rose (2015), and Lemon (2017) and on the Shondaland-produced TV shows Station 19 (2018) and Grey’s Anatomy (2022).
